IB Program Requirements
The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) curriculum in grades 9 and 10 prepares students to enter a demanding two-year IB Diploma Programme. The IB diploma requires the successful completion of three basic components in grades 11 and 12:
1. A comprehensive, integrated curriculum, including:
-
English
-
History
-
Science
-
Mathematics
-
Foreign Languages
-
Electives in the arts, the humanities, science, or technology
-
Theory of knowledge - A unique interdisciplinary course on the philosophy of learning. This course encourages students to reflect critically on the knowledge and experience acquired both inside and outside the classroom.
During their junior and senior years, IB Diploma Programme candidates study six subjects. Three must be studied at the higher level, encompassing two years of work. Three are studied at the standard level that may be completed in one or two years, depending on the subject. Students sit for six externally assessed examinations. IB examinations are given in May of each year.
2. An extended essay of 4,000 words on an approved IB topic.
3. Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS). Students must complete approved experiences and meet the 7 learning outcomes to complete the CAS requirement over their two years as an IB Diploma Candidate.
With the approval of the coordinator, some 11th and 12th grade students may complete certificates in individual subjects rather than the complete Diploma Programme. All IB students must complete the requirements for graduation as mandated by the Delaware Department of Education.
